Designer Picks: Lighting Options for Less

Lighting is such a key component of good design, but it is also overlooked - both because no one thinks about it and because a lot of people think it’s too expensive to update. While it can be difficult to find attractive lighting that doesn’t break the bank - it certainly isn’t impossible. Here are some of my top picks for lighting options, most of which are under $100 (the oversized rattan pendant comes in at $151). There are a variety of options, some of which I have used in my own home (we have the task lamp featured from Target as out nightstand light).

Remember that the key to good lighting is to create layers within your home - ambient, task, and accent lighting are all important and serve different purposes. I outlined some tips for achieving good lighting in this post. Remember that light temperature is also very important, and since only the LED picture sconce has an integrated (built-in) light bulb, you can easily swap out the bulb in other fixtures to create the vibe you’re going for.

Final tip (for now): Don’t be afraid to mix finishes throughout your home. There are certainly some tips that I’ll share in another post on how to achieve the mixed metal look in a cohesive look, but it is not difficult to do. To keep it simple, pick two finishes with similar undertones (either warm or cold) and use those throughout your home. Matte black is a neutral that goes with everything, and is on point right now. If you’re looking for a way to start adding other finishes, start with some matte black options.
