One Room Challenge: Week 4 - The Pantry
This week we almost got back to a usable pantry space! Kinda, anyways.
I decided to use Ikea cabinets for this project for a few reasons:
We have used them before and were fans of the quality
They were affordable - always a key when I’m doing home projects.
They were available in 15” deep base cabinets - which were key for this project.
Last time we used the Ikea cabinets, we used their whole system including the rail and feet, but this time I decided because there were such few cabinets that I was going to make the base out of 2x4s and just mount the cabinets directly into the wall. After a lot of back and forth, I also decided to create a “dead space” in the corner - mainly because I couldn’t figure out a way to make it look good and stay functional - and Ikea doesn’t offer any cabinet configurations in a 15” deep base unit. This is controversial because it is “wasted space” but I am still going to have plenty more usable space in this pantry than I had before.
I had to make sure that there was enough space for the drawers to open once both cabinets were installed, so that meant that there needed to be a gap in the corner - which meant I had to fill it. Apparently, once upon a time, Ikea sold a corner filler piece for this exact purpose, but no longer. Instead, I used this video from Kody Horvey as a starting point for creating a custom corner. When doing any kind of home project you are more than likely going to run into some kind of issue - the key is staying calm and working through possible solutions until you find the one that makes the most sense.
You can see where we are at right now. I’ve also added some support rails in the corner for the countertops - oh, and peek the new outlets that the electrician added this week!
Next week, we will be adding the drawers and countertops in! Stay tuned but in the meantime, check out how everyone else’s projects are coming along over at The One Room Challenge site!
